Food truck festival

Pin-Up Pastries, The Twisted Tandoor and Veg in a Box advanced easily to the second round of voting in Caliente’s Food Truck Madness bracket.

Despite serving vastly different fare, they emerged as the top three seeds based on pre-tournament reader feedback.

Unlike past Madness competitions that sought out Tucson’s best pizza or hamburger, the sheer variety of food trucks with devoted followings introduced an unpredictability into the mix.

But trends did emerge.

Sweets, for example, seemed to fare well. In addition to Pin-Up Pastries, Sarge’s Cheesecakes advances along with Just Churros, Bella’s Gelato Shoppe and Planet of the Crepes β€” a relative longtimer who makes sweet crepes (strawberries, bananas and French custard on a crepe, for example), as well as savory.

Readers also turned out for their faves: hot dogs, burgers and barbecue, sending You Sly Dog, Bruce Dogs, BurgerRito, Guero Loco’s Bubba-Que and Solid Grindz (a Hawaiian BBQ food truck) to the next round.

Hellfire Pizza Co., Bam Bam Mexican Asian Fusion, Cool Cajun Cafe and DC Jumbie Latin Caribbean round out the top 16.

The second round of voting starts Thursday at tucson.com/mobilemadness.
