RICHLAND, Wash. — Authorities say they have arrested a sword-wielding suspect in Richland who forced a nearby day care and school to go into lockdown.

The Tri-City Herald reports that 29-year-old Steven Houtrouw was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of attempted burglary and weapons violations.

Police had responded to reports of a man walking around with a sword when they encountered the suspect, who allegedly had been banging on the doors and windows of a day care with the weapon.

Police say they had to subdue Houtrow with a Taser after he didn't comply with their orders to drop the sword.

Houtrow was evaluated at a hospital and then booked into the Benton County Jail.

The case will be sent to a mental health professional for review.
