Flowing Wells 49, Rio Rico 7
At Rio Rico, the Flowing Wells Caballeros (5-0) remained undefeated halfway through their schedule by racking up 565 yards of offense and an easy win.
Caballeros quarterback Dylan Allison was efficient, throwing for 140 yards and one touchdown. The sophomore also had one rushing touchdown.
Just before halftime, a strange scenario occurred when Flowing Wells was called for a holding penalty on first down from the Rio Rico 8-yard line. During the discussion, another unsportsmanlike penalty was called on the Caballeros. After the penalties were assessed, it was then 1st-and-goal from the 35-yard line. The Caballeros would score on fourth down on the final play of the half to take a 35-7 lead to the break.
Rio Rico (2-3) running back Chris Limscomp scored the team's only touchdown and ran for a team-high 68 yards but appeared to sustain an injury to his head near the end of the first half and did not return.
Highlight reel
After forcing Rio Rico to turn it over on downs deep in Flowing Wells' territory and only up 20-7 in the second quarter, the ensuing possession saw Flowing Wells running back Dionte Flores break through the line on a 57-yard touchdown run.
Player of the game
Flores, who his coach said was "under the weather and not 100 percent" this week, did not show any ill effects as he ran 17 times for 238 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 45 yards.
By the numbers
154. The Flowing Wells offense shined but the defense may have been just as good, giving up only 154 total yards on the night.
He said it
"Our point of emphasis to the team this week was that if you want to be a championship caliber team you have to practice like a championship caliber team. I think we showed that in the second half." — Flowing Wells coach Mark Brunenkant, who thought his team was a little sluggish in the beginning despite scoring 35 points in the first quarter
