Sunnyside 37, San Tan Valley Poston Butte 14
SAN TAN VALLEY — He’s coached in 16 state championship games and won 12 of them. He remains seven wins away from setting the all-time Arizona record for wins for a football head coach.
Yet Poston Butte head coach Paul Moro is in line for perhaps a different kind of record this season — one he’d like to try to avoid.
His Broncos have sputtered to an 0-4 start to the season, and combined with the three-game tailspin the Broncos finished an otherwise successful 2014 on, Moro has now lost seven straight games at the helm. With an absolutely stacked schedule and Tucson High coming to town next week, the chances to snap the skid don’t seem strong.
In fact, of the six remaining teams on the Broncos’ schedule, only one — Canyon del Oro — currently has a losing record. Sunnyside (3-1) won easily on the road Friday night, dominating on the offensive side of the ball, winning 37-14 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.
Blue Devils head coach Glenn Posey was ultra-aggressive in his play calling, sometimes to his team’s detriment, as the only two Poston Butte touchdowns came on short fields – once when the Blue Devils failed to convert on a fourth-and-2 deep in their own territory as well as when the Blue Devils attempted an onside kick – one of three in the second half – that the Broncos recovered in great position.
Junior halfback Brandon Hatfield scored both times for the Broncos, who were outmanned up front, and managed only 155 yards of total offense on the game.
For the Blue Devils, nearly everything clicked offensively, aside from a few mental errors. Senior quarterback Nick O’Hagin threw his first interception of the season in the second quarter, but led the Blue Devils on five successful touchdown drives, throwing a touchdown pass to senior wideout Jorge Dabdoub on a fourth-and-3, and running for one of his own. Senior running back Ruben Figueroa had two short touchdown runs, while junior fullback Joe Hernandez added one of his own.
