ASU hires Phelps' coach to revive program
Two years ago, ASU athletic director Ray Anderson was an NFL vice-president whose annual big moment was standing on the stage during the latter rounds of the NFL draft and introducing special guests and former football stars to keep the TV cameras rolling. On Friday, Anderson made yet another big splash at ASU, hiring swimming star Michael Phelps’ long-time personal coach, Bob Bowman. ASU’s swimming programs have been dreadful for 20 years. Can Bowman turn it around? Bowman was the head coach of a large club program in Baltimore; his energies were almost totally dedicated to Phelps. That will not work in college. You can only play the Phelps card so long.
