The first conversion of a former Tucson Unified School District elementary school into a housing community was dedicated Thursday.
The Schoolyard community, developed by local builder Pepper Viner Homes, will have 56 single and two-story homes and a pocket park. Tributes to the former Wrightstown Elementary School include a plaque honoring Fredrick C. Wright, founder of the the school; a free community library and a commemorative walkway with personalized plaques offered to Wrightstown school alumni and staff workers.
The refurbished Wrightstown Elementary School sign will be on display in the community playground.
Last year, the Tucson City Council rezoned the east-side property for residential use. The Tucson Unified School District closed Wrightstown Elementary in 2010.
The new homes range in size from 1,400 to 2,100 square feet and start at $229,900.
