Mandarino to lead new UA diabates center

Lawrence J. Mandarino will lead the new UA Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism at the University of Arizona Health Sciences.

He also will be chief of the new Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the UA College of Medicine–Tucson.

Mandarino comes to the UA from Arizona State University, where he was director of the Center for Metabolic Biology and director of the Mayo/ASU Center for Metabolic and Vascular Biology at Mayo Clinic Arizona.

His research is aimed at treating insulin resistance syndrome, which increases the risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, β€œall of special concern in the Latino population,” the UA said in a news release. In 2009, he received the American Diabetes Association’s Cure Award.

County names Poirier planning official

Pima County’s Development Services Department has appointed Chris Poirier as planning official. Poirier served as deputy planning official for the past eight years, and has worked for the department since 1999.

He has a bachelor’s degree in regional development and a master’s degree in planning from the University of Arizona.

He will coordinate all land-use and zoning-code changes and oversee implementation of the Pima Prospers Comprehensive Plan. β€œOne aspect of this plan I am extremely excited to address ... is promoting in-fill and re-use of land,” Poirier said in a news release. β€œAnyone who has lived here over time has witnessed the expansion of our urban and suburban areas. It is now time to take a hard look at promoting development in areas that already have infrastructure.”

He replaces Arlan Colton, who retired.

Sundt promotes Dooley, Guevara

Sundt Construction has promoted employee-owner Patrick Dooley to vice president and controller of The Sundt Companies, Inc. and its subsidiaries.

Dooley has more than 23 years of experience in accounting and has been Sundt’s assistant controller for three years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from the University of Arizona, and is a certified public accountant.

In addition, Sundt team member Lisette Guevara has been promoted to the new role of accounting manager.

Formerly Sundt’s payroll supervisor for four years, Guevera has more than 10 years of industry experience. She holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Arizona.

Three execs moving up at Larsen Baker

Larsen Baker LLC has promoted three executives: Director of leasing Andy Seleznov will take on added responsibility as director of operations.

Seleznov, with Larsen Baker for 12 years, will now be responsible for the management of more than 2.4 million square feet of commercial properties in its portfolio.

Associate Melissa Lal was named director of real estate, and office manager Jennifer Raimondi becomes director of administration.

Lal joined Larsen Baker in 2006. Raimondi has been with the company 14 years.

CareMore names Gupta regional officer

CareMore Health System has named Dr. Piyush Gupta as its regional medical officer.

Gupta comes to CareMore from Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, where he was a patient safety and quality improvement fellow and internal medicine attending hospitalist.

He completed an internal medicine residency at Brown University and received a doctor of medicine from the University of Vermont College of Medicine.
