SynCardia a heartbeat from leadership role

Heart-manufacturing technicians examine the shells of artificial hearts at SynCardia Systems Inc.

The New York Times has posted a documentary detailing the history and modern use of the Temporary Total Artificial Heart, made by Tucson-based SynCardia Systems.

The Times’ 12-minute Retro Report video, "A Change of Heart" can be viewed atΒ tinyurl.com/zvspewp

The documentary details the development of the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart and its direct predecessor, the Jarvik 7. Like a heart transplant, the TAH-t is the only approved device that eliminates end-stage biventricular (both sides) heart failure, the company said.

Through personal stories of surgeons and SynCardia Total Artificial Heart patients, the video takes the audience from the first use of the artificial Heart for permanent use in 1982 to today’s use as a bridge to a donor heart transplant.
