In late May, Payless ShoeSource added a midtown location at 4140 E. 22nd Street, near Alvernon Way, to the closure list.Β

Payless ShoeSource also announced that negotiations are underway to determine if the stores at Park Place mall, 5870 E. Broadway, and Tucson Mall, 4500 N. Oracle Road, will remain open.Β

The Park Place location is less than a mile away from a recently opened Payless super store in Wilmot Plaza, 6351 E. Broadway.

The Topeka, Kansas-based shoe chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April and announced the closure of nearly 400 stores stores, including 378 in the United States. At the end of May, the retailer released a list of additional stores that it would like to close as part of the reorganization.

Prior to the bankruptcy filing, Payless, which was founded in 1956, had over 4,400 stores in more than 30 countries.
