The Tucson Airport Authority has reached an agreement with the ride-sourcing service Lyft so arriving passengers can order a car from the companyโs mobile app and take it straight from Tucson International Airport.
Starting Thursday, June 16, Lyft will now be able to pick up Tucson passengers from a designated area, curbside near the car-rental facility east of baggage claim.
Officials have been working for months to reach an agreement with Lyft in response to passenger requests, Airport Authority President and CEO Bonnie Allin said in a news release.
Lyft will pay the airport $2 for each person dropped off and $2 for each one picked up, together comparable to the pickup fee of about $4 that taxis pay TIA, airport spokeswoman Jessie Butler said.
Airport officials continue negotiations on a similar deal with Uber, Butler said.
Other transportation options at the Tucson airport include taxis, ride-share vans, car services and Sun Tran buses.
Some taxi companies and other traditional transportation firms have opposed allowing ride-sourcing services to operate at airports, arguing they donโt have to meet the same standards for background checks and insurance.
Uber, Lyft and other ride-hailing services are set to begin service at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Saturday, June 18, after approval by the Phoenix City Council in May.
