Tucson Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director George Hanson, will help close the third annual Tucson Desert Song Festival this weekend with Mahlerโs six-song โDas Lied von der Erdeโ (Song of the Earth), featuring a pair of rising New York Metropolitan Opera stars.
โDas Lied von der Erde,โ which explores the themes of living, parting and salvation, is arranged much like a symphony, with four movements. Guest soloists mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford, who has sung in more than 140 performances with the Met, and tenor Anthony Dean Griffey, a Met regular since the mid-1990s and a two-time Grammy winner, will take turns singing the songs.
The performance is part of the TSO’s MasterWorks chamber series. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 7575 N. Paseo del Norte, as part of the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance season (saaca.org); and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Catalina Foothills High School, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive. Note, Sunday’s performance is sold out and there are only a few tickets remaining for Saturday’s show.
This is the first time the TSO will perform the Mahler piece.
