Multiplatinum-selling 1990s horror-punkers AFI swing into the Rialto Theatre on Friday in what is the biggest concert of the slow post-holidays week.
Itβs been a few years since AFI played Tucson, but the band has had memorable stops here, including a sold-out show at the Rialto in February 2007 that was an encore of sorts to the California bandβs headlining gig with KFMA Day the previous spring.
But even in a slow week, thereβs plenty of live music to catch in the Old Pueblo. Hereβs a few shows that are worth considering:
- Singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff shares the Rialto stage with Tucsonβs own Copper & Congress at 8 p.m. next Thursday.
- San Francisco-based, Tucson-born rockers Mean Beans join a few local friends including Vine St. and Rey Murph for a free 21-and-older show at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. The show starts at 9 p.m. Friday.
- DJ Bob Felix, Sid the Kid and DJ Ladiesnight will get the Saturdaze Dance Party started at Congress at 10 p.m. Saturday; itβs free.
- The alt-folk collective Gungor slip into town for a Congress gig at 7 p.m. next Thursday; $20 and $40 through ticketfly.com
- The Departure: Tron headlines a full bill with Big Ox, Johnny Redd, The Garden and Jake & J Boogie at 9 p.m. today at Plush, 340 E. Sixth St. Itβs $5 at the door.
- Garboski, Brass Hands and Kiss the Red Alarm play Plush beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday. Call 798-1298 for details.
- 2nd Saturdays Downtown on Saturday includes a spotlight show with Tucson bluegrass band Run Boy Run at the Fox Tucson Theatre, 17 W. Congress St., beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Second Saturdays kicks off at 3 p.m. with reggae and Afro-pop artist K-Bass on the Scott Avenue Main Stage at Congress Street, where eclectic folky desert rockers The Tangelos perform at 5:45 p.m. Performances are free.
