The Foothills Philharmonic intergenerational orchestra will perform its annual springtime concert on Sunday, May 7.
It’s one of only two concerts the ensemble performs every year; it also plays a holiday concert each December, something it’s been doing going on 25 years.
Music director László Veres has led the orchestra, made up of players from age 9 to 87, since its 1993 inception. The players are of varying degrees of experience, from young students to retired music teachers and former professional or semiprofessional musicians, and the goal goes beyond just playing music. When it was formed through Catalina Foothills Community Schools, the goal was to provide an orchestral experience for students and adults while promoting better understanding and goodwill among the young and old in the community.
The ensemble often brings in professional musicians as soloists, including former Tucson Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Steven Moeckel, and its concerts are big draws.
On Sunday, TSO principal cellist Anne Gratz joins the group to perform Haydn’s Cello Concerto on a program that also includes the finale from Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 and selections from “Gigi” and music by Mancini and John Williams.
The concert begins at 2 p.m. at Catalina Foothills High School Auditorium, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and younger. Details: facebook.com/thefoothillsphilharmonic
