Poppy Kitchen

The windows reveal desert views at Poppy Kitchen, which Brian Metzger opened earlier this year.

Brian Metzger plans to add a tavern to his Metzger Family Restaurants.

Jackson Tavern, 2900 N. Swan Road, in Plaza Palomino, will open later this fall, serving a menu of New England comfort food and craft beers. Metzger Family Restaurantsโ€™ Executive Chef Virginia โ€œGinnyโ€ Wooters is still developing the menu.

The 3,700-square-foot restaurant, in the origianl Red Sky Cafe space, also will feature a large, tree-shaded picnic area with tables and chairs and JT Shack, an ice cream stand serving scoops of Thrifty Ice Cream.

Metzger said he is designing the space with architect Burak Bekat of a.23 Studios.

Jackson Tavern is named after Metzgerโ€™s son Jackson, who also was the namesake of his first restaurant, Jax Kitchen, on the northwest side. Metzger closed Jax in Janaury and opened Poppy Kitchen at La Paloma Resort & Spa, 3770 E. Sunrise Drive, in March.

Metzger filed bankruptcy in May for another of his restaurants, The Abbey at 6960 E. Sunrise Drive, after a creditor moved in to seize it for an unpaid debt.

Metzgerโ€™s former wife Sandy Ford took over operation of The Abbey in mid-July as part of the divorce settlement.

Metzger Family Restaurants also has Gio Taco at 350 E. Congress St. downtown, which opened in December.
