Long-departed Tucson Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Steven Moeckel has apparently whipped the Phoenix Symphony string section into shape.

Β  In his review this weekend of the orchestra's "Mozart's Surprises" concert, Arizona Republic classical music critic Richard Nilsen credited Moeckel with drilling "his string players into playing with more precision than they've ever managed before." Nilsen has been covering the symphony for nearly 25 years, which gives him unique perspective and sound credibility.

Β He gushed on: "We've had popular concertmasters, from Max Wexler to Boro, and they have been fine musicians, and we loved them, but I don't think any of them has taken on the duties of concertmaster as well as Moeckel."
