The latest YouTube-born sensation hip-pop duo Kalin and Myles are bringing their newly launched “Dedication” tour to The Rock on Sunday.
We’re No. 5 in the tour — their third headlining trek since joining musical forces in 2012 — that kicked off Tuesday in San Diego and runs through late April.
We caught up with the pair — singer Kalin White and rapper Myles Parrish — by phone in their native California last week as they were putting the finishing touches on a new video. They wouldn’t even hint about the project or the song; all Parrish would say was that the video was “totally at another level for us.”
The four-song “Dedication” EP includes the song “Trampoline” — which has a video with nearly 1 million views on YouTube. The pair’s videos routinely top 1 million views and they have nearly 743,000 followers of their Vine channel (vine.co/kalinandmyles).
A few things you should know before Sunday’s show:
- Blame the Bieber: White, 20, and Parrish, 22, met eight years ago at a house party hosted by rapper Parrish. But their musical partnership was launched in a movie theater when they saw the Justin Bieber documentary “Never Say Never” in 2011.
“I had never really collab’ed with another male singer before. Initially it wasn’t ever like ‘let’s try to get this popping (on YouTube)’. It was more like us collaborating and just making music and finding a love in that.” — Parrish.
- You may have seen them here before: Kalin and Myles opened for pop-country twin sisters Megan and Liz at The Rock in early September 2013.
- The goal is to inspire — and have fun: “Having fun — I think that is what our music is really based upon, not letting the negative things get in the way.” — White.
- Born and raised on YouTube, but live is where it’s at: “This is kind of everything for us, to get in front of people and really connect with it live. We like doing the stuff online, too, but I think really where it all comes out is definitely in the live shows.” – Parrish.
- Seriously, bring your boyfriend — or not: “We’re really excited to show the girls some new stuff. Not just the girls but everybody. I think about 90 percent of the crowd, maybe 95, is girls, which is cool. They got a great energy. We’re starting to see more guys.” — White.
