Starting today, the holiday season has officially began.

Chances are you have relatives visiting, looking for something to do. Or maybe you’re tired of the same ole thing over the holiday weekend.

So why not try something a little different this year?

Something like the holiday shows at Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium.

There are two different shows — “Season of Light” and “Laser Holidays.” Both start Friday, Nov. 27, and run through Jan. 10.

In “Season of Light” — a 35-minute show narrated by Noah Adams from National Public Radio — viewers will learn about the history of Christmas songs and traditions, and the astronomy behind the winter solstice.

It might be hard for young children to comprehend the content of this show. However, “it is also very visual, with charming illustrations and has lots of Christmas music along the way,” said Shipherd Reed, marketing and communications manager at Flandrau. “I took my kids a few years ago when they were 5 and 7 and it kept them both engaged all the way through, so it’s a show that delivers a lot of solid content for adults and can also entertain kids—a good show for the extended family when they come together during the holidays.”

“Laser Holidays” is a laser light show set to popular Christmas songs such as “The Christmas Song” by Nat King Cole and “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey.

Reed describes it this way: “Its a toe-tapping, finger-snapping collection of favorite seasonal songs that will really get you in the spirit of the holidays.”

If you want to make a day of it, Flandrau also has lots of exhibits, including its new “Puzzles, Proofs and Patterns,” which is full of hands-on puzzles, mineral displays and a gift shop.
