It’s a holiday win-win: Buy a book, get it wrapped, and help a dog find a loving home.

For the fourth year in a row, Southern Arizona Golden Retriever Rescue will be wrapping gifts for donations at Barnes & Noble at 5130 E. Broadway through Dec. 24. Volunteers and dogs will be there daily; from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to close through Dec. 14. Starting Dec. 15 they will be there open to close. Proceeds go toward veterinary care for the rescued dogs.

β€œWe’ll wrap anything,” said Teree Bergman, the group’s spokesperson. The group has Hanukkah paper as well as Christmas, and organizes the wrapping duties in shifts.

Southern Arizona Golden Retriever Rescue has found homes for 185 dogs since it formed four years ago.

Sometimes people get Golden Retriever puppies and then turn them in as the puppies become adult dogs who shed and need training and exercise, Bergman said. Some of the dogs are picked up as strays and others need to be rehomed when their owners go into assisted living or are otherwise unable to care for them.

The group is one of the rescues that appear in Caliente’s Adopt A Friend section each Thursday.
