Downtown Radio wants to take us to a cultural universe light-years in the past where everything was groovy.

The third annual Downtown Radio (KTDT 99.1 FM) Psychout on April 19 moves this year from the Screening Room downtown to the larger digs at The Loft in midtown. Why, you ask?

Demand, of course. The showcase event features psychedelic bands that take their cue from 1960s greats including Iron Butterfly, Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane, then add in a twist of modern sonic technology.

The end result: In the words of organizers, trippy vibes.

Add in trippy video images projected on a screen during the performances and you’ve got the quintessential Psychout experience.

This year’s lineup: the Myrrors, which is touring including all over Europe on its latest release “Hasta la Victoria”; the Psychedelephants out of Phoenix with a pair of albums to its credit; Cobra Family Picnic, which made Euopean splashes with its debut disc, last year’s “Magnetic Anomaly”; and Silver Cloud Express, morphed from the popular Tucson band the Modeens.

Other Tucson bands that were part of the first two events include The Desert Beats, Dread Cat and the Transitional Wave, Peppermint Hippo, Switch Affect, Trees Speak, Wet Marble, Crystal Radio and Mute Swan; and two bands that are encoring this year — Cobra Family Picnic and Silver Cloud Express.

Tickets are $10 at the Loft, 3233 E. Speedway. Details: downtownradio.org
