We found three shows on Tuesday, July 17, that just might fire up your dog days of summer.
The Psychedlic Furs with Mute Swan at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress St. We can only assume that the Brit punkers didn’t check out the weather forecast when they mapped out the U.S. leg of their summer tour. They land at the Rialto in the midst of our summer swamp — hot and muggy when the monsoon decides to declare itself, just plain punishing when the sun shines. The band hits the stage at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance through ticketfly.com or $33 at the door, and it’s an all-ages event. Tucson’s own Mute Swan opens the show.
Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters at Fox Tucson Theatre, 17 W. Congress St. The actor and rocker is bringing “The Speck Tour” to Tucson. If your only reference to Thornton is his Oscar-winning movie “Slingblade,” you might be surprised that Hollywood was his second love. His focus on music goes way back to the days in his youth — the Arkansas native turns 63 in August —when he was a roadie for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Johnny Paycheck and the Statler Brothers. He took his own turn behind the mic when he released his debut album in 1974. He hits the stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $26 to $48 through tickets.foxtucson.com
Middle Class Rut with Black Map and Gila Byte at The Rock, 136 N. Park Ave. The alternative rock duo is sharing the marquee with some decidedly heavier rockers: Hardcore punk outfit Black Map and Tucson’s own clusterpunk outfit The Endless Pursuit. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $13 in advance at ticketfly.com or $15 at the door.
