Among the many things to do this weekend, we found these three Tucson concerts to add to your must-see list:

  • The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra will put on its annual Mexican Independence Day concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Fox Tucson Theatre, 17 W. Congress St. The event, sponsored by the Mexican Consulate in Tucson and the Instituto Cultural Mexicano de Tucson, is a chance to celebrate Tucson’s cross-border culture, featuring mariachis, opera arias sung by vocalists from conductor Linus Lerner’s San Luis Opera Festival that he hosts in Mexico every summer, and works by Mexican composers. Admission is free and tickets are available from the consulate, 3915 E. Broadway. For more information, call 882-5595, Ext. 404.
  • Tucson Symphony Orchestra music director José Luis Gomez takes the podium with the Arizona Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, Sept. 15. Gomez, who opens his second full season with the TSO on Sept. 21, will lead the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music student ensemble in the second half of Saturday’s concert. UA conducting students will take turns in the first half. Gomez will conduct Manuel de Falla’s dances from the ballet “El Sombrero de Tres Picos.” It’s the first time Gomez will lead the student ensemble. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at Crowder Hall, 1017 N. Olive Road, on the UA campus. Tickets are $10 with discounts at tickets.arizona.edu or by calling 621-1162.
  • The Green Valley Summer Chorus is putting on its fifth annual summer concert, “I’ve Got Rhythm,” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. Yes, we know, technically summer is all but over and everyone’s back in school. But let’s not spoil the sentiment. The show is at the Community Performance & Art Center, 1250 W. Continental Road in Green Valley. Tickets are $15 in advance at performingartscenter.thundertix.com or $20 at the door. The chorus is putting on two shows this weekend. The first on Saturday, Sept. 15, is sold out. For more information, visit performingartscenter.org
