Jessica Fichot brings her multiethnic, multi-instrument show with Rhythm & Roots to Club Congress on Friday, July 1.

They use the word chanteuse to describe Los Angeles singer/songwriter Jessica Fichot, and it’s probably the best definition to describe what she does.

She writes songs and sings in multiple languages, from the French of her sometimes childhood home — born in upstate New York to a Chinese-American mother and French father, she spent much of her childhood in Paris — to Chinese and English. Her music is a hybrid of 1940s-style Shanghai jazz blended with international folk and gypsy swing.

In addition to singing, Fichot plays toy piano and accordion. Put her in front of her exceptionally talented band that includes upright bass and clarinet and sax to truly appreciate the breadth of her talent.

That’s how we will experience her on Friday, July 1, when Rhythm & Roots brings her to Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Tickets are $10 at the door, and it’s a 21-and-older show.

In addition to her music career, Fichot recently tiptoed into the world of video gaming. In a Facebook posting last week, Fichot said that although she is “just a beginner in the field, I’ve already started to collaborate with independent game makers to do audio for upcoming games.”
