Brewery Bootcamp participants lift kegs of water filled to different weights as part of their full-body workout at Dragoon Brewing Co. on West Grant Road.

Picture this: Youโ€™re working out โ€” squatting, sprinting, lunging โ€” doing things you usually reserve for the gym.

But youโ€™re not at the gym. Youโ€™re in a brewery.

Next thing you know, youโ€™re sipping (or chugging โ€” we wonโ€™t judge) a nice cold pint with fellow exercise and beer enthusiasts.

Youโ€™re not dreaming. Youโ€™re at Brewery Bootcamp, a full-body workout at Dragoon Brewing Co., led by Brice Helms, personal trainer and owner of Framework Fitness Training LLC.

Workouts are mainly body weight focused, but Helms uses some of Dragoonโ€™s rubberized five-gallon kegs, filled to different weights with water, for strength exercises such as dead lifts, bent-over rows and farmerโ€™s walks.

โ€œI change the format every class, so itโ€™s never the same routine and it ends up being a great cardiovascular and strength training workout,โ€ Helms said.

โ€œWe start about an hour before the taproom opens with a brief warmup, the workout itself and finish with a stretch-focused cool-down. Then all participants get to have a glass of any of Dragoonโ€™s beers. Itโ€™s a good post-workout reward.โ€

The novelty of working out at a brewery, and the low price, are a draw for participants.

โ€œI went because I thought it was cool that we got to work out in a brewery and you get a beer when youโ€™re done,โ€ said Alexis Barber, 27.

โ€œItโ€™s a good price, too. Ten dollars to work out and your first beer. Also, it didnโ€™t hurt that the instructor was cute.โ€

The programโ€™s goal is to introduce better beer to exercise enthusiasts and give the craft beer lover a great excuse to work out and keep fit, Helms said.

โ€œDrinking beer and exercise donโ€™t sound like a likely combination, but done in the right context, they can work very well together,โ€ he added.
