Among the many wonders of monsoon rains is that they can briefly turn normally dry washes into vibrant flowing streams.
One beautiful and convenient spot to witness the wonder of a gushing, if temporary, stream in the desert is a segment of Alamo Wash near East Fort Lowell Road.
Walking paths on both sides of the wash extend from Fort Lowell Road to East Glenn Street, offering an opportunity for a bit of exercise in a lush stream-side habitat with a pleasing soundtrack of water music.
The wash flowed bank-to-bank on Tuesday, July 11, after heavy rains in the area the day before. Be aware that flows occur only after periods of heavy or prolonged rain, with the wash remaining dry at other times.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Signs near the paths identify community groups that help keep the area clean and free from invasive vegetation.
One sign credits the Tucson chapter of the National Charity League Inc. for serving as an “Adopt A Wash” sponsor at the site.
“National Charity League partners with local organizations in supporting their philanthropic efforts,” said League spokeswoman Trina M. Callie-Dixon. “Our community is fortunate to have such beautiful washes and river walks, and NCL members are very active in ensuring these community treasures are clean for everyone who uses them.
“It is personally one of my daughter and my favorite activities since we can spend the time outside, actively engaged together,” she said.
