The Pima Council on Aging will launch two self-help workshops this month.

“A Good Way to Lose the Clutter for Keeps” is designed to help adults manage their hoarding behaviors, learn skills to reduce their clutter, and most importantly, learn they are not alone.

The 12-week program is being led by Pima Council on Aging’s Jennifer Hagan, University of Arizona Center on Aging’s Lisa O’Neill, and the UA Department of Psychiatry’s Kathryn Sanderlin.

While weekly attendance is strongly encouraged, participants can attend as many meetings as possible, and newcomers may register at any point.

Participants can also buy the book, “Buried in Treasures,” that will be used each week. The cost is $10 per person.

This workshop starts at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 17, at at the Abrams Public Health Center, 3950 S. Country Club Road in Room 1106.

Council on Aging Leads Chronic Pain Workshop

Chronic pain is a growing problem among older Americans. Research has shown that 50 percent of older adults who live on their own and 75 to 85 percent of those in care communities suffer from chronic pain.

However, understanding the causes of pain and learning tools and techniques through pain self-management programs can help people reduce the impact.

The Healthy Living with Chronic Pain workshop starts Jan. 23 and continues through Feb, 27 in the Madera Room of La Vista at La Posada, 501 La Posada Circle in Green Valley. Sessions run from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $35 per person and $45 per couple, which includes a book, CD and program supplies.

Past participants have reported that the workshop helped them increase their self-confidence and improve their quality of life, said Karen Ring, health promotion coordinator at Pima Council on Aging.

Developed by Stanford University, the nationally-recognized curriculum for the series of interactive workshops provides the information and tools to help an individual manage symptoms, emotions, and use relaxation techniques, as well as pacing and planning.
