Melancon has shot at Hoffman territory

I spotted future baseball Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman at McKale Center on Friday. He was in Tucson to accompany his son, freshman Brody Hoffman, to his first week of college. Hoffman, who saved a National League-record 601 games after he played shortstop at Arizona in 1988-89, saved 53 in his best season, in 1998. That mark is being challenged for by another ex-Wildcat, Pittsburgh closer Mark Melancon. On Friday, Melancon saved his 42nd game of the season, tops in MLB. Melancon has a chance to get to 50 in September. Hoffman also had a season with 46 and three seasons with 43 saves. Melancon’s previous high was 33.
