Among all the high school sports, one of the most difficult state championships to win is the individual golf title. That’s what made CDO senior Chris Meyers’ state championship last week so notable; in just 36 holes, you can’t have a blowup hole (or two) and still win. Except for former Champions Tour regular Bob Gaona (1958, Tucson High state champ), all of Tucson’s high-profile pro golfers who played on pro tours at some level were unable to win a state title: Sahuaro’s Rich Barcelo; Amphi’s Rich Mueller; Palo Verde’s Ben Kern; Sabino’s Nathan Tyler and city amateur champions such as Dale Faulkner, Jeff Kern, David McDaniel, Fred Hickle and Brian Prouty.
