Private prison in Eloy

A guard keeps a careful watch as inmates at private prison contractor Corrections Corporation of America's Saguaro Correctional Center in Eloy file in small groups through the facility's chow hall on March 10, 2009.

CARSON CITY, Nev.Β  β€” Nevada will send 200 inmates to an Arizona prison after state officials approved a $9.2 million contract with a private corrections company.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the state board of examiners on Tuesday approved the two-year agreement with CoreCivic Inc. The contract comes as the state's overburdened corrections system is facing a bed shortage.

Officials with the state Department of Corrections say the more dangerous and destructive inmates have been targeted for relocation to the Saguaro Correctional Facility in Eloy, Arizona. Most of the inmates will be transferred by late November.

Nevada will pay $72.58 per inmate per day during the first fiscal year, and the rate changes to $74.40 in the next fiscal period.
