Pedestrians in unincorporated parts of Pima County will now have to limit their stays on roadway medians after the Board of Supervisors approved a new ordinance Tuesday.
Touted as a safety measure by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, the approved ordinance limits to “one traffic signal cycle length” the amount of time pedestrians can stay on medians.
In a memo accompanying the ordinance, County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry wrote that the measure “should not be confused with previously proposed panhandling ordinances.”
Nevertheless, many members of the public who spoke in favor of the ordinance also expressed their concern about impacts homeless have in their communities.
The ordinance is effective immediately. Supervisor Richard Elías cast the lone no vote.
