Voters head into the Oro Valley Public Library.

It appears that several years of public outreach and input have paid off in Oro Valley: Early ballot returns show the town’s new general plan has the support of a strong majority of voters.

As of 8:20 p.m., 15,870 early ballots had been counted, more than 70 percent of which were in favor of the plan. There are a little over 30,000 registered voters in Oro Valley.

General plans give municipalities guidance as they develop and are required by state law.

The level of outreach, which won the city recognition from the Arizona Planning Association in 2014, stems in part from initial voter rejection of the previous general plan roughly a decade ago.
