David Dwayne Watson trial

David Watson, right, leans in to speak with attorney Michael Storie during opening statements in his murder trial.

Prosecutors will retry a former Tucson fire captain in the slayings of his ex-wife, her mother and her mother's friend.

David Watson's first murder trial resulted in a hung jury in November. His second trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 24.

A jury announced on Nov. 22 that it couldn't reach a verdict after a seven-week trial.Β

Watson was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors said he killed Linda Watson in 2000 during a bitter custody battle and that he fatally shot killing his former mother-in-law and her friend over grandparent visitation rights in 2003.

The defense said there was no evidence tying Watson to the killings.

Watson is still being held in Pima County jail on a $900,000 cash bond.
