A natural gas leak forced the partial evacuation of a shopping center in Marana on Wednesday morning.

Northwest Fire District crews were called to the center at West Tangerine and North Dove Mountain roads at about 8 a.m. after an excavator accidentally struck a 4-inch natural gas line, according to a news release from the department.

Fire personnel evacuated half of the shopping center. Most of the businesses had yet to open for the day.

Southwest Gas crews arrived and worked to stop the leak, which they did at about 8:45 a.m.

The shopping center was allowed to re-open as the utility crews worked to replace the section of broken pipe.
