Re: the July 11 column "You can get reimbursed for pothole damage β€” if right criteria are met."

β€œThe City of Tucson cannot be held liable for something [damage to cars] for which it has no prior knowledge [potholes in Tucson streets].” What a crock. It must take some active, ingenious avoidance tactics not to know of potholes in Tucson streets. They're virtually everywhere, exacting a general toll of wear and tear on vehicles as well as often specific, large financial losses.

Does the city expect to be informed of each and every pothole, all tens of thousands of them, before conceding prior knowledge? That would be brutal, but if so, then Tucsonans should just flood the system with emails identifying individual potholes.

It's only a matter of when, not if, serious bodily harm is caused by hitting a pothole, breaking a key car part, losing control, and crashing. In such cases, liability will be way more than mere hundreds of dollars to replace an axle.
