Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle collision that occurred on Tucson's east-side earlier this month, authorities said.
Manuel Herrera Jr., 40, was pronounced dead by Banner University Medical Center staff on Dec. 16 due to injuries he sustained in the crash.Β
At 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10, Tucson police officers from the east operating division and the Tucson Fire Department responded to a serious injury collision at East Golf Links Road and South Wilmot Road.
The fire department arrived first to provide aid to Herrera Jr. and he was sent to the medical center with life threatening injuries, the police department said in Facebook post.
When traffic detectives from the police department arrived to investigate, they determined that Herrera Jr. had quickly exited a private lot heading north on Wilmot Road.Β
He lost control of the vehicle,struck a raised median and crashed in the middle lane going northbound. Authorities said it appears that speed and alcohol were factors in the fatal collision.
Herrera Jr. was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision although officers located one on his 2006 Honda Sport motorcycle, the post said.
There have been 14 motorcycle fatalities from January to Dec. 21, four more than in the same period in 2016.Β
