Thunderbirds to headline D-M air show in March

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team will headline the 2016 Davis-Monthan Air Force Base open house March 12 and 13, the base announced Monday.

During the last installment of the biennial air show in 2014, which drew more than 150,000 people, strong winds grounded the Thunderbirds’ F-16 Fighting Falcons on the show’s first day but they flew a full show on Sunday.

Next year’s “Thunder and Lightning over Arizona 2016” also will feature other aerial demonstrations from a variety of teams and numerous static displays, including D-M’s A-10 Thunderbolt II ground-attack jets, HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue helicopters, F-16s and EC-130H Compass Call electronic-warfare planes.

Admission is free, and D-M’s airmen will be on hand to chat with attendees, the base said.

The public-affairs office of D-M’s host 355th Fighter Wing said it will provide more information on the open house closer to the event.
