Newly released police documents detail the aftermath of the Nov. 20 shooting death of a Tucson woman, whose husband has been arrested in connection with the crime.

On Nov. 20, 24-year-old Cassandra Yates was visiting a friend's apartment with her husband, when he allegedly shot and killed her before fleeing.

King Yates, 22, is being held in Pima County jail on a $1 million bond, following his arrest the morning after his wife's death. Tucson police found him sleeping in an empty apartment less than a half-mile away from where Cassandra was killed, when they responded to reports of a possible burglary, court records show.

On the night of Cassandra's death, the couple's friend went into another room to make a phone call, leaving Cassandra and King in the kitchen-dining room area, according to the interim complaint filed by Tucson police in Pima County Superior Court.

The friend heard a loud bang and returned to the room, finding Cassandra on the floor deceased from a gunshot wound, the interim complaint said.

When the friend asked what happened, King said, "Do you know how long she's been trying to kill me?" before wiping down a handgun with a towel, according to the interim complaint.

King told the friend "heΒ needed to wipe down everything he had touched inside the apartment," and took the friend'sΒ phone to delete content from when King hadΒ borrowed it earlier.

King put on the ski mask and left the apartment, at which point the friend called police, the interim report said.

After his arrest, King refused to answer questions by police.

Less than two weeks before Cassandra's death, King had been released from jail without bond after his arrest for a prohibited possession charge.Β Pretrial services recommended he not be released, but that decision was overruled, according to court records.Β

King Yates' criminal history extends further back, having served time in prison on a drug conviction and two previous arrests for domestic violence.

He has a case management hearing scheduled for Jan. 9.
