A Tucson police officer shot and critically wounded a bicyclist Monday after the bicyclist produced a gun during a traffic stop, the Tucson Police Department reported in a new release.

The man, identified as Osee Calix, 33, was taken to Banner-University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, according to TPD.

Around 11:15 a.m., an officer in a police car stopped Calix near North Columbus Boulevard and East Fairmount Street. As Calix attempted to brake, he fell off his bike.

Paramedics and an additional officer were called to help treat the 33-year-old for minor injuries.

After receiving care, Calix stood up and produced a handgun, said TPD spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Bay.

Officers tried to take the gun from Calix, who fired at least one shot during the struggle. One of the officers then fired his gun, striking the man.

No officers or paramedics were hurt in the incident.

Police did not identify the officers and did not say where Calix was shot. Police are investigating the shooting.
