TUCSON, Ariz. β The state Department of Corrections says a prison inmate is dead as a result of an apparent suicide.
The department says 21-year-old Alejandro Orona died Wednesday at the state prison complex in Tucson.
Orona was serving a 1 1/2 -year prison sentence on convictions in Maricopa County that include unlawful use of means of transportation.
According to the department, prison personnel found Orona unresponsive in his cell and performing life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.
Department spokesman Andrew Wilder says an investigation into Arona's death indicates he used a piece of clothing to asphyxiate himself.
