A University of Arizona assistant track coach was arrested Friday on several domestic violence charges.

Craig Carter, a throws coach, was booked into the Pima County Jail on three charges related to domestic violence: aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, threats and intimidation with injury and damage and stalking with fear of physical injury or death upon another. He also faces one count of interfering with an educational institution.

He was being held on a $40,000 bond as of Monday evening.

The circumstances of Carter's arrest were not immediately clear. Officer Joe Bermudez, a spokesman for the UA's police department, said the department would not comment on the case because the investigation is ongoing.Β

Instead, he pointed the Star to the University's communications office.

The university is conducting an investigation and the employee has been placed on administrative leave with pay, said Chris Sigurdson, a UA spokesman.

Sigurdson also spoke on behalf of UAPD, saying that the police department is investigating and that the university is assisting fully.

Carter has been a throws coach at the UA since 2006. He came from Utah State University, which inducted him into its sports Hall of Fame last year.

He was voted top assistant track coach of 2011 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He is known for having coached All-AmericanΒ Julie LabonteΒ and OlympianΒ Jill Camarena-Williams, among others
