Federal agents seized more than a ton of marijuana worth about $1 million in an abandoned tractor-trailer rig in Rio Rico.

On Thursday, a Border Patrol drug dog alerted to the presence of drugs in the trailer that was on a dirt lot on Avenida Acaponeta, according to a news release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Agents with ICE's Homeland Security Investigations were called in and determined the trailer had a false registered owner.

The trailer was searched and 157 packages of marijuana β€” about 2,081 pounds β€” were found concealed in cardboard watermelon containers, ICE said.

The investigation is continuing. This is the second largest marijuana seizure in 2015 for ICE's Homeland Security Investigations in Nogales.
