A 12-year-old boy was removed from a car using the Jaw of Life Wednesday, during a multiple car collision on the north side, authorities said.

The boy and another patient were transported to a local hospital and an additional four patients were evaluated at the scene, said Northwest Fire spokesman, Capt. Adam Goldberg.

The rear-end crash took place on the eastbound I-10 exit ramp at Ruthrauff Road around 12 p.m., with at least three cars sustaining heavy damage and injuries to passengers in all three vehicles, Goldberg said.

Northwest Fire crews found the 12-year-old boy trapped in the back seat of the middle car, and it took nearly an hour to free him from the crushed vehicle, using the Jaws-of-Life, Goldberg said.

Paramedics were able to reach him while he was trapped, and rendered first aid to him while he was being freed from the car.

He was transported to Banner-University of Arizona Medical Center with serious injuries, Goldberg said.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is being conducted by the Arizona Department of Public safety.
