A former Pima County sheriff's detective has been indicted on multiple felonies, including trafficking stolen property, extortion and fraud, authorities said.

David Tarnow, a 15-year-veteran of the sheriff's department, was arrested Monday by sheriff's deputies after a grand jury indicted him on theft-related crimes, said Courtney Rodriguez, a department spokeswoman.

He's accused of stealing and selling items from the department's evidence inventory and local pawn shops, in addition to theft by extortion, Rodriguez said.

Tarnow, 55, resigned last July after he learned that a citizen complaint had led to the initiation of an internal affairs investigation, which expanded into a criminal investigation.

Hired by the sheriff's department in 1999, Tarnow had no record of discipline and was named detective of the quarter in 2010 and 2013, Rodriguez said.

Tarnow has been charged with three counts of trafficking, two counts of fraud, one count of theft and one count of theft by extortion.

The sheriff's department has notified the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board of Tarnow's arrest.
