Police investigate an officer-involved shooting near the 100 block of South Bella Vista Drive in Tucson, Ariz. 28-year-old Owen Frank Herrera was shot multiple times after refusing to drop his weapon.

A knife-wielding man who was shot by a Tucson police officer late Saturday afternoon has been identified.

Owen Frank Herrera, 28, was shot multiple times after refusing to drop his weapon on the city's west side near "A" Mountain.

According to Tucson Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Dugan, the incident took place around 4:30 p.m. when officers responded to a 911 call for a welfare check in the Bella Vista neighborhood. The caller reported an adult male acting erratically in a home on the 100 block of South Bella Vista Drive.

An officer approached the home as Herrera and another individual exited the front door. Herrera was holding a knife.

The officer ordered Herrera to drop the knife. He advanced towards the officer who then discharged his firearm, striking Herrera multiple times, Dugan said.

The man was taken to Banner-University Medical Center and is in stable condition.

Upon discharge from the hospital, Herrera will be booked into the Pima County Jail with one count of aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, Dugan said.

The officer involved in the shooting was not injured and has been identified as Officer Troy Lansdale, who is a three-year-veteran of the department and one of the lead police officers in operations division downtown.

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
