Road improvement work at Houghton Road and 22nd Street will mean traffic delays for much of Tuesday. The work is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with police on hand to direct traffic.

Road work at the intersection of 22nd Street and Houghton Road likely will cause major backups and delays throughout most of Tuesday (March 8).

Crews with the city of Tucson will be working to relocate traffic signals at the intersection as part of widening project. The temporary traffic signals need to be moved in preparation for a planned shift of traffic lanes to the west side of Houghton.

Work hours are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

City officials initially planned for a full closure of the intersection. β€œWe thought it would be a total closure, but now it won’t be,” said M.J. Dillard, engineering project manager with the city of Tucson.

Police officers will direct traffic during the work.

The project is part of the larger Regional Transportation Authority Houghton Corridor project, which included widening the road, rebuilding intersections and installing medians on portions of the roadway between Interstate 10 and Tanque Verde Road.

The work at Houghton and 22nd includes dual left-hand turn lanes in all four directions, as well as dedicated right-hand turn lanes in all directions.

Dillard said the intersection could be completed as soon as May, depending on weather conditions.

Work on the stretch of Houghton between 22nd and Irvington Road also is scheduled to begin soon.

Along with that, an additional bridge over the Pantano Wash on Houghton is planned. The bridge would allow for three additional travel lanes.
