Holualoa Companies and SinfoníaRx unveiled the results of their year-long effort to restore the Pioneer Hotel Dining Room at Stone Ave. and Pennington Street in downtown Tucson on October 25, 2018.

To restore the 2,500-square-foot Dining Room to its 1930s splendor, the project team used modern plans, while referencing old materials, photos, floor plans and drawings.

The restoration included: 1) Restored ceiling: Dozens of fist-sized and larger holes in the original plaster tiles have been patched, and the entire ceiling was repainted by Tucson artist Joe Pagac. 2) Restored walls and balconies: Architectural features, such as arched insets in walls and curved concrete details along balcony edges, were restored. The walls were repainted/stenciled based on original painted walls discovered during early stages of the project. 3) Metalwork: New chandeliers and wrought-iron balcony railings were created and installed after the original features were destroyed or removed in the 1970s.
