Pima Animal Care Center

The county has been charging the city $23,000 a month in fees to help house animals like this pit bull at the Pima Animal Care Center.

Despite the fact that nearly 150 pets were adopted from Pima Animal Care Center during last weekend's "Clear the Shelters" event, PACC is nearing capacity again already.

As of Tuesday morning, PACC had 653 pets at its main shelter, along with dozens of cats and kittens waiting for adoption in PetSmart stores, according to a news release.

“We’re at our busiest time of year and in desperate need of adopters and foster parents to help us clear kennels to make room for incoming pets,” PACC director, Kristen Auerbach, said in the release.

Each year the shelter takes in 19,000 pets, many of them during the busy summer months, when PACC receives many litters of puppies and kittens.

To help ease overcrowding in the shelter- particularly in the circus-style dog tent- PACC is lowering fees this weekend to $10 for adult dogs and cats, ages 6 months and older, and $20 for puppies and kittens.

The "Big Top Tent Sale" will run through Sunday, and all pets will come spayed or neutered, with age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipped and with a coupon for a free vet visit. An additional $18 licensing fee will apply to adult dogs, the release said.

The shelter, located at 4000 N. Silverbell Rd., is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
