Two families were displaced when a fire in one residence spread to a second home Wednesday, a Tucson Fire official said.

One dog died in the blaze.

Multiple 911 calls just after 10 a.m. reported a house fire with heavy smoke and flames showing in the 4100 block of N. Iroquois Ave., near North Flowing Wells and West Roger roads.

The lone resident at the home noticed a back room on fire and safely got out of the house, according to Capt. Andrew Skaggs, a spokesman for the Tucson Fire Department.

One house was about 50 percent involved by the time fire crews arrived, and since flames spread to a neighboring house, a second alarm was called in for additional personnel. Separate crews extinguished the fires in each home in about 20 minutes and conducted searches.

All residents got out safely, and no injuries were reported.

Crews rescued four dogs from one of the houses. A fifth dog was found, but efforts to revive it were not successful, Tucson Fire said.

The American Red Cross was assisting the six residents of the two homes.

The fire began in an attached storage area of the first home, and the cause is under investigation.

Neither house had a working smoke alarm.
