Crews remove Waste Management trash bins from residences in South Tucson, which is behind on its bills.

The South Tucson City Council Thursday night approved a temporary contract to resume trash collection, which had been threatened in a billing dispute.

Interim City Manager Veronica Moreno confirmed the $3,000-a-month contract with the city of Tucson would give residents in the 1.2-square-mile city trash service.

The plan, which would have South Tucson lease garbage bins and a surplus vehicle from Tucson, still needs approval from the Tucson City Council, which is scheduled to meet early next month. Moreno thinks trash collection could resume in a few weeks.

Waste Management has begun collecting its green residential garbage bins from neighborhoods that have seen their last pickup, with service expected to end for good on Sept. 1. In court papers, the company says South Tucson owes it at least $300,000.

Commercial trash collection is unaffected because private businesses have individual contracts for garbage and recycling.
