Pima County Sheriff's Department investigators at a home in theΒ 6500 block of West Copperwood Way on Monday after a toddler apparently discharged a firearm, injuring the mother.

A mom was shot today when she tried to take a handgun from her toddler, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department says.

The woman was shot once in the arm. She was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, said Deputy Cody Gress, an agency spokesman.

The shooting occurred at a house in the 6500 block of West Copperwood Way, in a large development southwest of Tucson called Star Valley, near West Valencia Road and South Camino Verde.

Gress said the toddler, believed to be about 2 years old, had grabbed the unsecured handgun and it discharged when the mom tried to take it away. Deputies were still investigating this afternoon.

No one else was injured.

More details were not immediately available.
