Ann Day

Former Pima County Supervisor Ann Day, who was killed in a car accident on May 7, gets a hug at Northwest Community Park in 2009. The park got new playground equipment partially due to her efforts. It’ll now be Ann Day Community Park.

A month after former Pima County Supervisor Ann Day was killed in a Tucson traffic collision, the current Board of Supervisors unanimously approved renaming Northwest Community Park in her honor Tuesday.

At the meeting, Day’s granddaughter Cassandra Watters thanked the supervisors and told them “this means a lot to us.”

Describing her late grandmother as a “lover of the land,” Watters went on to say, “It’s amazing and very special to know that we have this park named after her.”

The park, near Foothills Mall, 7401 N. La Cholla, will now be known as the Ann Day Community Park.

Day, who was a county supervisor from 2001 to 2012 and also served as a state senator, was a strong advocate for parks, including the one that now bears her name, according to a county news release.

Day, 77, a Republican, represented the county’s District 1 until she decided to end two decades of political service in 2011 by not seeking re-election, according to Star archives.

Day, sister of former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, served 10 years in the state Senate and 12 years representing District 1.
